Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt: the duration of the extension, the reason for the change in plans, and the maintenance issue. The tone is appropriate for a formal request to a landlord. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the explanation regarding the move is slightly confusing and could have been articulated more clearly to ensure the reader fully understands the circumstances. Despite this, the purpose of the letter is clear, and the reader is left in no doubt about the writer's intentions. All parts of the task are addressed, meeting the requirements for a Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized into three distinct paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Additionally' and 'Unfortunately' helps to link the paragraphs and introduce new points. However, some transitions are a bit mechanical, and the flow within sentences is occasionally hindered by grammatical slips. The referencing is generally clear, and the overall structure is coherent. The paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the request, the explanation, and the maintenance issue, which is a positive feature of the writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate their needs effectively. There are some attempts at using topic-specific vocabulary, such as 'lease agreement' and 'technician'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing, such as 'grocery stories' instead of 'grocery stores' and 'at this time of season' instead of 'at this time of year'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a limited range of vocabulary. To reach a higher band, the writer should focus on more precise collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'my children still doing there school' (should be 'are still doing their schooling') and 'send technician' (missing article). Additionally, there are punctuation issues, such as the lack of capitalization for 'i' and some run-on sentences. While these errors are frequent, they rarely impede the reader's understanding of the message. The writer demonstrates an attempt at complex structures, but control over them is inconsistent. Improving basic subject-verb agreement and article usage would significantly enhance the accuracy of the writing.
