Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Mr smith,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to ask your permission about the extending of my renting lease.

I have been living here in this apartment for five months and my lease will be end in the next month of July. As we had the contract for six months. I would really appreciate if you could extend this lease from six months to one year.

Earlier I did the lease for six months because I was on my study permit and was not sure about my Job. This month I got a full time position as an Early childcare educator in the 16th Avenue which is just 20 minutes ride by Train from here. Consequently, I would like to extend my lease to one year. Because this will save my travel time.

Everything is fine and I really love this place but recently I had faced an issue with the main door lock because the key was stuck in it for almost three times. So, It would be nice if you could replace this lock. Moreover, the tap of the bathtub is leaking because of which water is getting wasted and the noise of this also bothers me especially at night.

Please let me know your opinion regarding this. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Your Sincerely,

Hardeep kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: the duration of the extension, the reason for the change in plans, and the maintenance issues. The tone is appropriate for a formal request to a landlord. The ideas are clearly presented and the purpose of the letter is immediately evident. The response is well-structured and covers all requirements of the prompt effectively, ensuring the reader understands the request and the context behind it. No information is missing, and the development of each point is sufficient for the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the request, which helps the reader follow the narrative. Cohesive devices such as 'Consequently', 'Moreover', and 'because of which' are used to link ideas, although some transitions are slightly mechanical. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the request to the justification and finally to the maintenance issues. Overall, the structure is coherent and easy to follow, meeting the requirements for a well-organized letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The vocabulary is generally appropriate for the task, with terms like 'full time position', 'extend this lease', and 'maintenance' (implied). There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'the extending of my renting lease' (should be 'extending my rental lease') and 'I did the lease' (should be 'I signed the lease'). While the range is adequate to convey the message clearly, it lacks the more sophisticated or precise collocations that would push the score into the higher bands. However, the vocabulary used is sufficient to communicate the intended meaning without difficulty.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The letter uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'my lease will be end' (should be 'will end'), 'the key was stuck in it for almost three times' (should be 'three times'), and 'Your Sincerely' (should be 'Yours sincerely'). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are some issues with sentence fragments and capitalization. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout, and the mistakes do not significantly impede communication. The control over grammar is sufficient for a band 6.0.
