Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Luke,
As we are reaching at our end of agreement for the aparment. I would like to extend my agreement, not only this flat has helped me in my professional career but also made my life extremely easy. From commuting for work to making friends in the flat.
My family is planning to visit me in the summer to spend some time with my son. I would like to extend the lease for more six months. Initial plan was to move to bigger city for more oportunity however, I got promoted in my current job therefore I would like to continue staying here.
The kitchen has an issue with the tap. The water tap is leaking the water, I tried to fix it myself but turns out, the the tap needs to be replaced. I would really appreciate if you can look into this. Also, I will be waiting for your decision on extending the lease.
Regards,
Bhargav.

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|

| Lexical Resource | 6.5 |
| Grammatical Range and Accuracy | 6.5 |
| Overall | 7.0 |
Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly stated the desired extension period, provided a logical reason for the change in plans (a job promotion), and identified the maintenance issue regarding the leaking kitchen tap. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands your situation and request. To reach a higher band, ensure that the opening and closing are slightly more polished and that the transition between the request and the maintenance issue is smoother.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'however' and 'therefore,' to connect ideas. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that sentences within paragraphs are more tightly connected. For instance, the first paragraph is a bit fragmented; using more cohesive markers would help the reader follow your reasoning more easily. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'professional career,' 'commuting,' and 'opportunity.' There are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'aparment' (apartment) and 'oportunity' (opportunity). Additionally, the phrase 'reaching at our end of agreement' is slightly unnatural; 'approaching the end of our agreement' would be more precise. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items would help elevate the score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'not only this flat has helped me' (should be 'not only has this flat helped me') and 'more six months' (should be 'another six months'). There are also some punctuation and article errors, such as 'the the tap.' While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent use of articles will significantly improve your accuracy.
