IELTS Writing Task 1 question
Five months ago, you started renting an apartment on a six-month agreement. You now wish to stay in the apartment for longer than the six months you originally agreed with the owner.
Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter
- say how long you now want to rent the apartment for
- explain why your plans have changed
- tell the owner about a problem in the apartment
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir,
I am writing to request you that I want to extend my stay in your apartment. Please give the permission of stay for another six months.
I have already residing here from half year, and I need to stay for next six months. I love the apartment due to the availability of numerous amenities like water and electricity is available 24 X 7. Additionally, rent is affordable as compared with other apartments. The facility of doing the laundry service is the best due to scheduled timings and each apartment has it own laundry machine due to which one can do it conveniently without rush.
I wanted to leave this province but due to the change in the management plan of my company, I decided to stay back. This apartment has cleaning and basic facilities, others are not similar. Yet, cheaper options are available, I want to stay over here due to my comfort zone.
However, I found a little problem with the shower handle today morning, when I was going for bath. I humbly request you to fix it as quick as possible, because otherwise water bill will exceed our budget limit.
Yours faithfully,
Daler Arora

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: the duration of the extension, the reason for the change in plans, and the maintenance issue. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal request. However, the development of ideas is slightly uneven; while the explanation for staying is clear, the request for the extension could be more professionally phrased. The purpose of the letter is clear from the outset, and the reader is left with no doubt about the writer's intentions. Overall, the response fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'However', and 'because' are used to link sentences and ideas. While some transitions are a bit mechanical, the overall structure is coherent. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the request, the justification, and the maintenance issue. The referencing is generally clear, though some minor improvements in sentence flow would enhance the overall readability.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their needs and describe the apartment's amenities clearly. There are some instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'give the permission of stay' and 'I have already residing here'. While the range is sufficient to convey meaning, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. The use of terms like 'amenities' and 'conveniently' shows a decent range, but there is a reliance on simpler structures that limits the lexical impact.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I am writing to request you that I want to' (should be 'request that I be allowed to'), 'I have already residing' (should be 'I have been residing'), and 'today morning' (should be 'this morning'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. The writer demonstrates an attempt at complex structures, but control is inconsistent. Punctuation is generally functional, though some phrasing is awkward.
