  • tell the owner about a problem in the apartment

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Ms. Kevin,

I am writing to request you to increase the length of lease as previous agreement is going to expire at the end of this july month which was just for six months.

I would like to stay in the same apartment for one more year.

I gat hired in an international company and luckily, they have one location in our town so, I do not need to move around. That's why I am thinking to stay here for one year until I stable financially.

But in the apartment there is a issue with bathroom water drainge as water stucks most of times while getting shower. I would like you to fix this problem as soon as possible.

I hope you would consider my request and increase the time period of my stay in your apartment

I look forward to hearing from you.

Best Regards,

Deep

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt: the duration of the extension, the reason for the change in plans, and the maintenance issue. However, the response is slightly under the 150-word minimum requirement, which is a negative factor. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, though it could be slightly more polished. To improve, ensure you fully develop your ideas to meet the length requirement comfortably and use a more formal closing structure. Because the response is under the word count, it cannot reach the higher bands for task achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the task. You use basic linking words like 'but' and 'that's why' to connect ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical. To achieve a higher band, try to use a wider range of cohesive devices (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'in addition to this') to create a smoother progression of ideas. The paragraphing is clear, which helps the reader follow your request easily.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your needs clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'lease', 'agreement', and 'international company'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'water stucks' instead of 'water gets stuck' or 'drainage is blocked'. Additionally, 'july month' is redundant. To improve, focus on learning common collocations and using more precise vocabulary to describe household problems and professional situations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I gat hired' (spelling/tense), 'until I stable' (missing verb 'am'), and 'water stucks' (incorrect verb form). These errors are noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and verb forms. Increasing your control over basic sentence structures will help you move to a higher band.
