Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter

- explain why your plans have changed
- tell the owner about a problem in the apartment
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mr. Singh,
Hope you are in good health. I am writing this letter that I am interested in renting the apartment number B16 in the Sandlewood area for another one year, as my previous agreement was for only six months.
My plans have changed because of my work placement. When I rented this apartment five months ago, I was not sure if my company would hire me permanently because I was on prohabation period for six months. Now, my manager has approved me for parmanent role in the same company for another year. That is why I want to extend my stay.
Everything in this apartment is going great except one thing, and that is air conditioning. I am facing issues with the vents in the kitchen from last few weeks, and it is getting really hard to work in hot temperature during summer days. I will be more than happy if you could solve the problem.
Hoping for your prompt response. If you need any documentation i will be more than happy to provide you.
Your sincerely,
Ramandeep kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state the desired extension period (one year), provide a logical explanation for the change in plans (a permanent job offer following a probation period), and identify a specific maintenance issue (the kitchen air conditioning). The tone is appropriate for a formal request to a landlord. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, ensure that all details, such as the specific apartment number, are integrated more naturally into the flow of the letter rather than appearing as a list of facts.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each point, and a polite closing. Each paragraph focuses on a single topic, which makes the letter easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices such as 'because of', 'now', and 'that is why' to link your ideas. However, the transition between the request for extension and the maintenance issue could be smoother. The use of paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall progression of information is logical, meeting the requirements for a well-structured formal letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'work placement', 'permanently', and 'documentation'. However, there are some spelling errors, such as 'prohabation' (probation) and 'parmanent' (permanent), which slightly detract from the professional tone. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the variety and precision of more advanced lexical choices. Focusing on accurate spelling and using more varied collocations would help elevate your score in this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'When I rented this apartment five months ago, I was not sure if my company would hire me...'. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'I am writing this letter that I am interested' (should be 'to inform you that I am interested') and 'from last few weeks' (should be 'for the last few weeks'). Additionally, there is a minor error in the sign-off ('Your sincerely' instead of 'Yours sincerely'). These errors do not impede communication but occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score.
