IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Five months ago, you started renting an apartment on a six-month agreement. You now wish to stay in the apartment for longer than the six months you originally agreed with the owner.

Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter

  • say how long you now want to rent the apartment for
  • explain why your plans have changed
  • tell the owner about a problem in the apartment

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Owner,

Hope you are doing great,

I am writing this letter to inform you that 5 months back I rented a apartment from you for 6 months lease agreement. Now its been 5 months I wanted to extend my lease because this place is so easily accessible for me as there are so many near amenities that i can easy assess to and moreover, this place is near my college.

I wanted to rent this apartment for more than 8 months as I am doing my internship for the supply chain management program in which I am currently enrolled in. As my placement is in the city so I don't want to find another place for rent. Also, I want to let you that the heating system is not properly working as winters are here so we need heat in the rooms otherwise we will get sick easily.

I hope you will look upon it.

Regards

Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the task: the duration of the extension, the reason for the change in plans, and the mention of a maintenance issue. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the explanation regarding the internship and the description of the heating problem could be more detailed to fully satisfy the requirements of a Band 7 or higher. The purpose of the letter is clear, and the reader is left in no doubt about the writer's intentions, which satisfies the core requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear opening and closing. Paragraphing is used to separate the request from the maintenance issue, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat basic and occasionally repetitive. For instance, the use of 'also' and 'moreover' is functional but lacks variety. Some sentences are slightly disjointed, such as the transition between the internship details and the heating problem. Improving the flow between sentences using a wider range of linking words would elevate the coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their message clearly. There are some attempts at topic-specific vocabulary, such as 'lease agreement' and 'internship'. However, there are instances of awkward phrasing and word choice, such as 'near amenities that i can easy assess to' (likely meaning 'access') and 'look upon it' (which is not the standard collocation for requesting repairs). The range is sufficient to communicate, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as '5 months back I rented a apartment' (article usage), 'its been 5 months I wanted to extend' (tense inconsistency), and 'I want to let you that' (missing object). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of commas and capitalization. These errors do not impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage would be beneficial.
