Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Asal,
Hope you are doing well, I am writting this letter to express my interest in extending my current 6 months contract.
I am intrested to stay here for a longer time because I recently got enrolled for a 8 month college internship, and staying at your apartment seems like a very good decision. As it is very near to the college as well as renting this place does not cost a fortune. These change in plan was because one of my friend gave me a reference letter for the internship in his department, Where he has been working for over a year now. It would be appreciated if we could add another 8 months to the current contract. Further more I also wanted to talk about a problem with bathroom shower I have been facing for a month, If you could get a plumber to repair that shower it would be great. Let me know if extending my contarct would be possible or not. Thank you for your time.
Regards,
Om

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: stating the desired extension length, explaining the change in plans due to an internship, and reporting the bathroom shower issue. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, ensuring the reader understands your request and the context behind it. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more detail regarding the specific dates of the extension or the urgency of the repair, but overall, the task requirements are fully met.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the purpose of the letter to the justification and finally the maintenance request. You use some cohesive devices such as 'as well as', 'further more', and 'because'. However, the paragraphing is insufficient; the entire body of the letter is contained in one block. Breaking the text into distinct paragraphs for the request, the explanation, and the maintenance issue would significantly improve the structure and readability. Additionally, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother with more varied linking words.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'enrolled', 'internship', and 'reference letter'. There are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'writting' instead of 'writing', 'intrested' instead of 'interested', and 'contarct' instead of 'contract'. While these do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations related to renting and property maintenance to elevate the sophistication of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'It would be appreciated if we could add another 8 months'. However, there are several grammatical slips, including punctuation errors (e.g., comma splices like '...internship, and staying...') and capitalization issues (e.g., 'Where he has been...'). The phrase 'These change in plan' should be 'This change in plans'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. Increasing your control over subject-verb agreement and punctuation will help you achieve a higher score.
