Student answer (Band 7.0)

Mr, Sharma

I hope you are fine, I want to write a letter to request you about our originally agreement for living in apartment for six moths, but now I want to increase this period.

First of all, I want to stay in your apartment for next three months until October. Because my study is just completed now and I have to do internship in the next months. Additionally, I have to attend graduation ceremony function in October. Consequently, I need a place at least for next three months.

I know this cause effect you significantly, but when I was done my agreement with you I did not know about internship. This is the reason why my plan have changed now. Also, this place comfortable for me in all aspects of my daily life.

Lastly, I would like to complain about the problem I faced in the apartment is that winter will started already. So, heating system was not working properly from last month. Also leakage from kitchen sink was really trouble for me. Please fix these things as soon as possible.

Waiting for your response promptly.

Best regards,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt: the duration of the extension, the reason for the change in plans, and the maintenance issues. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited; for instance, the explanation regarding the internship and graduation ceremony is clear, but the request could be more persuasively phrased. The structure is logical, and the purpose of the letter is immediately apparent to the reader. All parts of the task are addressed, meeting the requirements for a Band 6.5 or 7.0, though the development of the maintenance request could be more detailed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. The use of cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'Additionally', 'Consequently', and 'Lastly' helps guide the reader through the text. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. The referencing is generally clear, although the connection between the sentences in the final paragraph could be smoother. Overall, the progression of ideas is easy to follow, and the paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different points of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate their needs effectively. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'consequently' and 'significantly', which are used correctly. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'our originally agreement' (original agreement) and 'this cause effect you' (this causes you inconvenience). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over word forms and collocations to reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The letter uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'my study is just completed' (has just been completed), 'I did not know about internship' (the internship), and 'winter will started already' (has already started). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor issues with sentence boundaries and article usage. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding the message. The writer demonstrates a sufficient grasp of basic grammar, but more consistent accuracy in complex structures is needed for a higher score.
