Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to I am planning to extend the duration of stay in your apartment which I have rented at an agreement for a half-year.
I have given you the rent for six months according to the contract we had about five months ago. But now, I have to rent for this apartment for the next 12 months. I would really love to stay here for longer period of time as It feels now a home to me.
Recently, I got job as a Math teacher in a Government Senior Secondary School, Nakodar, which is approximately 6 kilometers away from this apartment. My probation period is of one year. After this duration of one year, I can apply for transfer. In the meanwhile, this place is best option to stay as it provides comfortable environment and I am familiar to this area. That is why, I would like to stay here for next 12 months.
Overall, the facilities related to furniture, electricity and water are very convenient here but there is a little problem regarding the loud noise of music from the next apartment late at night that is disturbing my sleeping pattern.
I would really appreciate, If you could allow me to hire this room for one year by solving the issue with the next door apartment. Looking forward a positive response from your side.
With regards,
Navpreet.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly stated your desire to extend the rental period for 12 months, provided a logical explanation regarding your new job as a Math teacher, and identified a specific issue regarding noise from the neighboring apartment. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, ensuring the reader understands your situation and your request. To reach a higher band, ensure that the opening sentence is grammatically sound, as the current phrasing is slightly repetitive and unclear.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the request, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In the meanwhile', 'That is why', and 'Overall' to link your thoughts. However, the transition between the introduction and the body could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the letter follows a standard formal structure, which aids in the overall flow of the communication.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'extend the duration', 'probation period', and 'convenient'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'hire this room' (usually 'rent this apartment') and 'familiar to this area' (should be 'familiar with'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise collocation. You have successfully used topic-specific vocabulary related to renting and employment, which is sufficient for this level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'I am writing this letter to I am planning to' (redundant structure), 'rent for this apartment' (unnecessary preposition), and 'Looking forward a positive response' (missing 'to'). Some articles and prepositions are also misused. Despite these errors, the sentences are generally understandable, and the punctuation is mostly correct. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and preposition usage will help improve your accuracy.
