IELTS Writing Task 1 question
Five months ago, you started renting an apartment on a six-month agreement. You now wish to stay in the apartment for longer than the six months you originally agreed with the owner.
Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter
- say how long you now want to rent the apartment for
- explain why your plans have changed
- tell the owner about a problem in the apartment
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Smith,
I hope you are doing well. I am Kulwinder, and I have been living in your apartment for the last five months. Before, I did the contract with you for only six months, but due to some reasons, I have to stay here for another six months.
Before six months, I came here for my six-month internship program, but now my company wants me to stay here for a longer time to learn about more companies. Because they think I learn quickly about the company's perspective. Another reason is that I will also be joining some language classes here to expand my communication skills further.
I just want to tell you that I am facing only one problem from the last month: sometimes the AC was not working, and I suffered a lot due to the summer heat at night. I hope you will solve this problem as soon as possible and give me more time to stay in the apartment. I am very grateful to you.
Yours faithfully,
kulwinder

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: the duration of the extension, the reasons for the change in plans, and the maintenance issue. The tone is appropriate for a formal request to a landlord. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, although the explanation regarding the internship could be slightly more concise. Overall, the response fulfills the requirements of the task effectively, providing enough detail to ensure the reader understands the situation and the request.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which aids readability. Cohesive devices such as 'but', 'because', and 'another reason' are used to link ideas, though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The paragraphing is appropriate for a letter format. The progression of ideas is easy to follow, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task. You use functional language such as 'internship program', 'communication skills', and 'grateful'. However, there are some instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'did the contract' instead of 'signed the contract' or 'learn about more companies'. While the range is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more precise collocations would elevate the response to a higher band. The spelling is accurate throughout the text.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'Before six months, I came here' (which is slightly awkward) and 'the AC was not working' (where 'has not been working' would be more accurate given the duration). Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear, and the mistakes do not impede communication. You show a good attempt at using different tenses, though control over time markers could be improved.
