Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Luis,
I hope you and your family are doing well.
I am writitng to request you about an extension of apartment renting agreement which was previously agreed for six months.
First and formost, I would like to rent this apartment for an additional six months, as my company offered me a permanent position to work as a recruiter. Not only this, but the location where the apartment is situated is very close to my workplace; therefore, it would be convenient for me to commute.
Moreover, my parents are also planning to visit me in a few months; as a result, it would be great for them to live in this area, as all types of facilities, such as temple, gardens, shopping malls, and many more are available and all are located near by.
However, an air conditioner is not working properly; as a consequence, it is difficult to stay at the home in the afternoon during summer. In addition, sometimes, there is a foul smell coming from the drainge that causes hygine issues.
I hope you will understand my situation and approve my request.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Kind regards,
Dhruvi Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state the desired extension length, provide a logical reason for the change in plans (a permanent job offer), and identify specific maintenance issues (the air conditioner and drainage). The tone is appropriate for a formal request to a landlord. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, ensuring the reader understands your situation and the urgency of the repairs. To reach a higher band, ensure that the transition between the request for an extension and the maintenance issues feels slightly more integrated, though the current structure is perfectly functional for a General Training Task 1.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost', 'Moreover', 'as a result', and 'in addition' to link your sentences and paragraphs. While some of these transitions are standard, they are used effectively to maintain flow. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the letter follows a standard formal structure, which contributes to the overall coherence of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your meaning with precision. Phrases like 'permanent position', 'convenient for me to commute', and 'time and consideration' are used correctly. There are a few minor spelling errors, such as 'writitng', 'drainge', and 'hygine', which are slips rather than a lack of vocabulary knowledge. The use of 'facilities' and 'consequence' shows an attempt to use more sophisticated language. To improve, focus on proofreading for these small spelling inaccuracies, as they slightly detract from the otherwise professional tone of the letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. For example, the use of 'Not only this, but...' and 'as a result' shows a good grasp of complex sentence construction. While there are occasional grammatical slips, such as 'request you about' (should be 'request an extension from you') and 'stay at the home' (should be 'stay at home'), these errors do not impede communication. The majority of your sentences are clear and error-free. Continued practice with prepositions and article usage will help you achieve greater accuracy in your writing.
