Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter

  • explain why your plans have changed
  • tell the owner about a problem in the apartment

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mr. Patel

I am writing to express my interest regarding to rent your apartment for extra four months.

To begin with, I have been living in your apartment since five months. Therefore,, I wish to be your tenant for few more months. Moreover, I got promotion at my office. So, my Manager wanted me to stay in this city to get potential training from the seniors.

Furthermore, until my training gets done, I am keen to stay here in your apartment because this apartment have all the necessary facilities such as a gym, an elevator, a swimming pool and so on.

Even though the apartment is giving me a cozy vibes, the only problem I have been facing since yesterday is the fridge leakage. I will look forward to get someone to repair it.

I sincerely value your support in this matter. Additionally, keeping open and consistent communication with each other would be highly beneficial.

Kind regards,

Mike Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt: the duration of the extension, the reason for the change in plans (a job promotion), and a specific maintenance issue (fridge leakage). The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. However, the development of ideas is somewhat brief. For instance, while you mention a promotion, explaining the nature of the training or the expected duration of the project would have added more depth. The purpose of the letter is clear from the outset, and the reader is left in no doubt about your intentions. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is expanded with slightly more detail to fully satisfy the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each serving a clear purpose. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'Additionally' to link your ideas. While these are effective, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The progression of ideas is easy to follow, moving from the request to the justification and finally to the maintenance issue. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different sections of the letter. To improve, try to vary the placement of your cohesive devices so that the flow feels more natural and less like a list of points.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'tenant', 'promotion', 'facilities', and 'consistent communication'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'cozy vibes' (which is informal and slightly awkward in this context) and 'get potential training' (which is not a standard collocation). The phrase 'express my interest regarding to rent' is also grammatically incorrect. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Focusing on collocations and more formal phrasing will help elevate your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are several grammatical errors that persist throughout the text. Examples include 'since five months' (should be 'for five months'), 'this apartment have' (subject-verb agreement error), and 'I will look forward to get' (should be 'to getting'). Punctuation errors, such as the double comma in 'Therefore,,', also occur. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct usage of gerunds after specific phrases to improve your accuracy.
