IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Five months ago, you started renting an apartment on a six-month agreement. You now wish to stay in the apartment for longer than the six months you originally agreed with the owner.

Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter

  • say how long you now want to rent the apartment for
  • explain why your plans have changed
  • tell the owner about a problem in the apartment

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mark,

I hope this letter finds you well. The reason for writing this letter is to ask for the extension of our apartment lease. I remember initially we both agreed for a 6 month agreement but now I would really appreciate if you could extend the lease for next one year.

All my plans got changed just in blink of an eye because the office where I am currently working offered me a higher position with a raise in my income. The offer was really impressive so I accepted it. The travel distance from the apartment to my office is only 7 minutes.

Also there are some minor problems in the place as I have started noticing bugs around the walls and there is a leaking on the ceiling which gets worst when it starts raining outside.

I appreciate taking your time to read my letter and I hope to hear back from you soon.

Yours truly,

Abhishgek

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly stated the desired extension period (one year), explained the change in your circumstances due to a job promotion, and identified specific maintenance issues (bugs and a ceiling leak). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. To reach a higher band, you could have provided more detail regarding the maintenance issues, such as how long the leak has been occurring or if you have attempted any temporary fixes, which would further develop your ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter follows a logical structure with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your points easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Also' and 'The reason for writing', though the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect your sentences more fluidly. For instance, the transition between your job promotion and the apartment's location could be smoother. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'extension', 'lease', and 'circumstances'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in collocation and word choice. For example, 'in blink of an eye' is an idiom that feels slightly informal for this context, and 'there is a leaking on the ceiling' should be 'there is a leak in the ceiling'. While these errors do not impede communication, using more precise terminology would enhance your score. You successfully convey your message clearly throughout the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'agreed for a 6 month agreement' (should be 'agreed on a 6-month agreement') and 'gets worst' (should be 'gets worse'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article errors, such as 'the office where I am currently working' (which is fine, but could be more concise). Despite these errors, your control of grammar is generally good, and the mistakes do not cause any confusion for the reader.
