Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Paras,

I hope this letter finds you well.Iam writing this to request you that recently i did an agreement with you of renting an appartment for six months but now my plan has been changed to stay more than six months due to an emergency situation.

Initially,i did an agreement for six months but now i changed my plan to staying for more than six months. However, now i want to rent a flat for longer span which may be for 10 months.

The reason for this longer stay is that currently iam facing challanges in finding new apartment. In light of this,i cannot move to any other place for living right now.Although, new flats are offering residence after november, which is quite a long time period.Despite waiting,i wanted to to stay in your apartment.

In addition,i wanted to address a problem of poor dainage system in your flat, which is causing complications for better living.I request you to please see this matter at your earliest convienence.

I look forward to a hearing from you.

Yours Faithfully,

Maha

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt: the duration of the extension, the reason for the change in plans, and the mention of a maintenance issue. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. However, the development of ideas is somewhat repetitive; for instance, the first two paragraphs both state the intention to extend the lease, which makes the letter feel slightly circular. To reach a higher band, ensure that each paragraph introduces new information rather than restating previous points. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and the requirements are met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally repetitive. For example, the transition 'In light of this' is used, but the flow between sentences within paragraphs is sometimes hindered by awkward phrasing. The referencing is generally clear, but the logical progression could be smoother. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a distinct focus would enhance the overall coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate their needs effectively. There are some spelling errors (e.g., 'appartment', 'challanges', 'dainage', 'convienence') and minor collocation issues, such as 'longer span' instead of 'longer period'. While the range is sufficient to convey the message, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. To improve, focus on accurate spelling and using more natural collocations for formal correspondence, such as 'lease agreement' instead of 'did an agreement'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, including missing articles ('the apartment'), incorrect verb forms ('i did an agreement'), and punctuation issues (e.g., missing spaces after commas). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the message, they are frequent enough to impact the overall fluency. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and basic sentence punctuation. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring accuracy will help elevate the score.
