IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Five months ago, you started renting an apartment on a six-month agreement. You now wish to stay in the apartment for longer than the six months you originally agreed with the owner.

Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter

  • say how long you now want to rent the apartment for
  • explain why your plans have changed
  • tell the owner about a problem in the apartment

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mr. Smith,

I am writing this letter to request you to extend my contract of agreement to stay in your apartment No 325 till December 31st of this year.

As per our initial agreement I was supposed to leave that apartment on June 30 because it was the last month of my level 2 of ECE in my college. However, now I have recently planned to continue my studies for level 3 in the same college.

The another thing, I want to bring in your kind notice that one of the windows of my room has broken last week due to the hailstorm in our city that needs to be fix because it is letting cool air in. In winter season it would be hard to survive due to harsh weather.

I would highly appreciate your attention in this matter. I look forward to your favourable response in this matter.

Yours sincerely,

Sandeep kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt: the duration of the extension, the reason for the change in plans, and the report of the broken window. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. The purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning, and the ideas are developed sufficiently to meet the task requirements. The response is well-focused and addresses the reader directly, maintaining a consistent purpose throughout the text.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the request to the explanation and finally the maintenance issue. Cohesive devices such as 'However', 'As per our initial agreement', and 'In addition' (or similar transitions) are used to link ideas, although some transitions could be more varied. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the overall structure is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task. You use some specific terms like 'contract of agreement' and 'hailstorm'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'The another thing' (should be 'Another matter' or 'Furthermore') and 'needs to be fix' (should be 'needs to be fixed'). While the range is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more precise collocations would elevate the response to a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'request you to extend' (should be 'request that you extend'), 'window... has broken' (should be 'was broken'), and 'In winter season' (missing article 'the'). Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the letter. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of passive voice when describing the damage to the apartment.
