IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Five months ago, you started renting an apartment on a six-month agreement. You now wish to stay in the apartment for longer than the six months you originally agreed with the owner.

Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter

  • say how long you now want to rent the apartment for
  • explain why your plans have changed
  • tell the owner about a problem in the apartment

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Nick,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter for a request to extend our lease period for the apartment.

For now, I want to extend my lease period for more six months if it is possible. As you informed earlier the reason behind the short term lease was job, but now I got a full-time permanent position at the same location. Due to which I am planning to stay more six months at this location.

I would also like to mention couple problems that I am facing during the stay. The foremost one is kitchen lighting. There is not enough natural light source in kitchen, can you please replace the old one with new brighter lights if possible. Also, the vacuum that you provide is not effective enough. So, if you can provide the new one that would be much more appreciated.

Let me know once you make your decision and a swift response to the problems would be appreciated. Thanks!

Yours sincerely,

Yashraj

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: the duration of the extension, the reason for the change in plans, and the mention of apartment issues. The tone is appropriate for a formal request to a landlord. The purpose of the letter is clear from the outset, and the ideas are developed sufficiently to meet the requirements of the task. The response is well-structured and covers all necessary information without any omissions, demonstrating a clear understanding of the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow the narrative easily. Cohesive devices such as 'For now', 'Due to which', and 'Also' are used to link sentences and ideas. While some transitions are slightly mechanical, the overall flow is smooth and the paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. The use of referencing is clear throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their needs and concerns clearly. There are some minor inaccuracies in collocation, such as 'more six months' instead of 'an additional six months' and 'provide the new one' which is slightly vague. However, the range is sufficient to convey the intended meaning without difficulty. The tone remains professional and polite throughout, which is essential for this type of correspondence.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The letter demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'I am writing this letter for a request' (should be 'to request'), 'more six months' (should be 'an additional six months'), and 'the vacuum that you provide' (should be 'provided'). Despite these slips, the meaning is never obscured, and the errors do not impede communication. The punctuation is generally accurate, and the sentence control is sufficient for the task.
