Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mr.Davis,

I am writing this letter to ask about the possibility of extending my agreement for apartment 48 as my agreement is expiring at the end of next month . I would like to request an extension of atleast six months , where i would stay at the end of March next year.

My circumstances have been changed as my employer has extented my work assignment for another six months. Because i am very statisfied with my apartment and it is 3 mins away from my office so i pefer to stay here six months more if possible.

I am very happy overall with the property ,i would like to bring minor issue to your attention . The hot water unit in the bathroom has started making a loud noise over the past few days . I would be grateful if you could arrange for a plumber to inspect it at your earliest convenience.

Thankyou for considering my request . I look forwarar to hearing from you regarding the extension.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly stated the desired extension period, explained the change in your circumstances due to your work assignment, and identified the issue with the hot water unit. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands your request and the context behind it. The letter follows a logical structure, and the purpose is clear from the opening paragraph. To reach a higher band, ensure that all details, such as the specific dates, are presented with complete clarity to avoid any potential ambiguity for the recipient.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is well-organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the task, which helps the reader follow your points easily. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'because', 'as', and 'if possible' to link your ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat repetitive and could be more varied to improve the flow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, the explanation of your plans, the maintenance request, and the closing. Improving the range of linking words would enhance the overall cohesion of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'extending my agreement', 'circumstances', and 'earliest convenience'. There are some minor spelling errors, such as 'atleast' (at least), 'statisfied' (satisfied), 'pefer' (prefer), and 'forwarar' (forward), which are distracting but do not impede communication. You also have some minor collocation issues, such as 'my circumstances have been changed' (should be 'have changed'). To improve, focus on proofreading for spelling accuracy and using more precise collocations to convey your message with greater sophistication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I would be grateful if you could arrange for a plumber...'. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, including punctuation errors (e.g., spaces before commas) and minor tense or article usage issues (e.g., 'the hot water unit' vs 'a hot water unit'). The sentence 'where i would stay at the end of March' is slightly awkward in its phrasing. Despite these errors, your control of grammar is generally good, and the mistakes do not hinder the reader's understanding of your request.
