Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mohit,

I am writing to let you know that I want to live in this apartment for more than six month agreement because I feel fully comfortable here and along my budget is also preferred with this rent.

To begin with, I am planning to live here for next six months too because one of my friend named Raman come from India for the first time due to this I have changed my plan to move from here . Moreover, within short period of time it is really hard for me to find new apartment according to my budget. So, I am requesting you to give me more time to live here.

Moving further, I want you to look at some things that are not working properly in this apartment such as kitchen taps, along with gas stove. When I am alone I am fine to tolerate these things but now my friend came to my apartment within few months so I am requesting you to repaired it before he came. Hope you understand my condition.

All in all,

Best regards

Amandeep Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the task: stating the desired extension length, explaining the change in plans, and reporting maintenance issues. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a landlord. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation regarding your friend's arrival is slightly confusing in its phrasing, and the request for repairs could be more clearly linked to the urgency of the situation. To reach a higher band, ensure that your explanations are fully developed and logically connected to the request for an extension.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. You use some cohesive devices like 'To begin with', 'Moreover', and 'Moving further' to transition between ideas. However, some of these transitions feel a bit mechanical or slightly unnatural in context. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'my friend came to my apartment within few months', which makes the timeline of the repair request confusing. Improving the flow between sentences and ensuring that pronouns and time markers are used precisely will enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message, such as 'agreement', 'properly', and 'tolerate'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'along my budget is also preferred' and 'within short period of time'. These errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, but they do limit the precision of your writing. To improve, focus on learning common collocations and phrases used in formal correspondence, rather than relying on literal translations or less natural phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'one of my friend named Raman come' (subject-verb agreement), 'before he came' (tense inconsistency), and 'to repaired it' (incorrect verb form). While these errors rarely impede communication, they are frequent enough to affect the overall fluency of the letter. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement, verb tenses, and the correct use of infinitives after 'to'. Proofreading for these basic errors will significantly improve your score.
