Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Apartment Manager,
I hope you are doing well.
I am writing to you about renting the apartment for a long period.
Well, when I started renting this apartment for only six months agreement, but now I would like to continue living in the same building for another year. There are a lot of amenities available, such as a gym and game lounge. Moreover, being near the bus stop, some grocery stores, and a park is convenient. It is very good for me because I feel stress-free about catching a bus and buying something.
Furthermore, my plan has changed because of my promotion at my job. My company gave me a contract for a year. Therefore, I want to live here. One reason is that there are a lot of facilities that I mentioned earlier. This apartment is situated in the centre of the town, and I enjoy the night view from the balcony.
However, there is one issue with this apartment that is heat system. Sometimes it is not working properly. Please, can you send someone to repair it?
I hope you can approve this agreement and solve the problem as soon as possible.
Kind regards,'
Prabh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: the duration of the extension, the reason for the change, and the maintenance issue. The tone is appropriate for a formal request to a landlord. The ideas are relevant, though the explanation regarding the promotion could be slightly more integrated with the request for the extension. The purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning, and the reader is left with no doubt about the writer's intentions. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'Therefore' helps to guide the reader through the text. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between the reasons for staying and the maintenance issue could be smoother. The referencing is generally clear, and the paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. The overall progression of ideas is logical and easy to follow throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their needs clearly. There is a range of topic-specific vocabulary such as 'amenities', 'contract', and 'facilities'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'six months agreement' (should be 'six-month agreement') and 'heat system' (should be 'heating system'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the message without difficulty, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'when I started renting this apartment for only six months agreement' (which is a fragmented/awkward construction) and 'buying something' (which is vague). Punctuation is generally correct, but there are minor errors in article usage and sentence construction. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. The majority of the sentences are understandable, but the control over complex structures is inconsistent.
