Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter

  • say how long you now want to rent the apartment for
  • explain why your plans have changed
  • tell the owner about a problem in the apartment

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Hello sir,

I hope you are doing well. As a part of your apartment I am writing this to inform you about changing some plans in the lease. As you know that I was renting flat on a half year agreement However, I want to change it and stay for a longer period of time.

I want you to extend it for more than one year. I would love to do that as I am planning to give Physiotherapy license exam called PCE and I need to stay at one place in order to prepare for my exam. I have been living here since six months and I like it here. As you know the place is very clean and spacious but there is one problem here that I want you to solve.

The problem is that I want a peace in the flat because I am planning to start my preparation for exam but the washing machine is making a lot of noise and need to repair it. If you would help me in that I really appreciate it.

Thank you very much for your time and understanding.

Kind regards,

Yesha Sharma

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly stated the desired extension period, explained the reason for your change in plans (the PCE exam), and identified the issue with the washing machine. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. To reach a higher band, ensure your opening is more professional; 'Hello sir' is slightly informal for a formal request. Additionally, while you mentioned the need for peace, explicitly linking the noise to your ability to study strengthens the argument. Overall, the task is fully addressed with relevant, well-developed ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'However' and 'As you know', to connect ideas. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by slightly awkward phrasing, such as 'As a part of your apartment I am writing this'. To improve, ensure that transitions between sentences are smoother. For example, the jump from discussing the lease extension to the washing machine issue could be bridged more effectively with a clearer topic sentence. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the message.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'lease', 'spacious', and 'extend'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'give Physiotherapy license exam' (should be 'take' or 'sit for') and 'need to repair it' (should be 'needs to be repaired'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and variety of less common lexical items that would elevate the response to a higher band. Focusing on collocations—words that naturally go together—will help you sound more natural and precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I have been living here since six months' (should be 'for six months') and 'If you would help me in that I really appreciate it' (should be 'If you could help me with that, I would really appreciate it'). These errors are frequent but do not impede communication. To improve, pay closer attention to verb tenses and conditional structures. Increasing your control over complex sentences will help you achieve a higher score in this criterion.
