Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear John,
I am writing this letter to inform you that I want to extend my lease agreement for this apartment for atleast one year.
As we discussed before that my lease for this apartment is only for six months but I have decide to live in this area because it is very flexible for me in regards of facilities like shopping mall, bus stop, even there is a cinema hall as well. Also I got a job near this apartment which is around 15 minutes drive from here. So as a result I changed my plan to move different place rather than your apartment.
I am living here for past five months in your apartment. It is very great place for working people. But there is one problem I would like share with you is that this is starting of summer and your apartments air conditioning vents did not work properly. I put AC on 20 degree still whole apartment feels like a shahara desert. I am kindly requested you please can you solve this problem as soon as possible.
I hope you understand my situation and extend my lease for one year.
Best regards,
Krish

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: the duration of the extension, the reason for the change in plans, and the maintenance issue. The tone is appropriate for a formal request to a landlord. The ideas are clearly presented, and the purpose of the letter is immediately evident. To reach a higher band, the development of the reasons could be slightly more sophisticated; for example, instead of listing facilities, you could focus on how the convenience of the location specifically impacts your daily routine, which would add more depth to the explanation of why your plans changed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central focus. You use some cohesive devices like 'Also', 'So as a result', and 'But', which help the flow. However, the transition between the explanation of your plans and the maintenance issue is a bit abrupt. Using more varied linking words or phrases to connect your ideas, such as 'Furthermore' or 'In addition to this matter', would improve the overall flow and make the progression of ideas feel more natural and less mechanical.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'extend my lease agreement' and 'flexible for me' are relevant to the context. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'flexible for me in regards of facilities' (should be 'convenient due to the facilities') and 'move different place' (should be 'move to a different place'). To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing. The description of the apartment as a 'shahara desert' is a creative attempt, but 'unbearably hot' would be more appropriate for a formal letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For instance, 'I have decide' should be 'I have decided', and 'I am kindly requested you' is grammatically incorrect; it should be 'I kindly request that you'. Additionally, there are issues with article usage and verb tenses, such as 'this is starting of summer' (the start of summer). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
