Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr. Cooper,

I am writing this letter to extend the lease agreement of the house more than the six months.

Before five months, the agreement was framed that the house has been rented for six months for me. However, I would like to stretch my stay for next 1 year. Therefore, I would like to renew the lease of the house for the forthcoming year.

There are several reasons for the extension of stay in this home. The foremost one is that this room is near to my job location. Since I do not have my personal vehicle, it is easy for me to commute daily to my job location. Moreover, the grocery stores and malls are also located in 2 kilometer of radius of house which provides me more comfort and convenience.

Overall experience in the house is awesome except the leakage of water from the upper roof of the house. Therefore, I would like to request you to repair the ceiling at the earliest convenience. I look forward to hearing from you regarding your decision of renting me the house for more one year.

Yours Faithfully,

Nilay Shah

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly stated the desired extension period, provided logical reasons for your change in plans (proximity to work and amenities), and identified a specific maintenance issue regarding the roof leakage. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. To improve, ensure that the opening statement is more natural; for example, instead of saying 'extend the lease agreement of the house more than the six months', you could say 'I am writing to request an extension of my current lease agreement'. Overall, the task is fully accomplished with a clear purpose and relevant supporting details.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the request, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You have used some cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Therefore', and 'Moreover' to link your sentences. While the flow is generally good, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To reach a higher band, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the connection between sentences is smoother. For instance, the transition between the reasons for staying and the mention of the maintenance issue could be more fluidly integrated.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, allowing you to communicate your needs clearly. Phrases like 'forthcoming year' and 'earliest convenience' are well-chosen and appropriate for a formal context. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'stretch my stay' (better: 'extend my stay') and 'in 2 kilometer of radius' (better: 'within a 2-kilometer radius'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise collocation and preposition usage to achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is sufficient for this task. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'Before five months, the agreement was framed' (better: 'Five months ago, the agreement was made') and 'more one year' (better: 'one more year'). Additionally, there are minor issues with article usage and phrasing. While these errors are noticeable, they do not cause confusion for the reader. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct placement of modifiers to ensure your writing is more polished and error-free.
