IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Five months ago, you started renting an apartment on a six-month agreement. You now wish to stay in the apartment for longer than the six months you originally agreed with the owner.

Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter

  • say how long you now want to rent the apartment for
  • explain why your plans have changed
  • tell the owner about a problem in the apartment

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sam,

I am writing to show my keen interest to extend my lease aggrement to stay at your apartment.

As I have a six month lease to rent the apartment and this will going to complete next month on 30th September 2026. Unfortunately I would like to change the period of stay till end of december this year. So in total it will be 10months aggrement instead of 6 months.

I would really appreciate that you will accept my request in short time. When I got the project in your city it was just for 6month as per my offer letter, although due to some expansion and workload the deadline is changed till mid-december.

Your apartment is lovely place to stay and everything is perfect as per my requirement except the leakage from washbesin pipe is disappointing, due to this, water tank has no enough water in every morning to take shower.

I would appreciate if you could figure out this issue and provide a suitable solution.

I look forward ti hearing back from you.

Yours faithfully,

Prarthana

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly stated the desired extension period, provided a logical reason for the change in plans (work project extension), and identified a specific maintenance issue (washbasin leakage). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. To improve, ensure that your explanation of the timeline is more precise; for example, stating 'I would like to extend my stay by four months' is clearer than the current phrasing. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical structure, with each paragraph addressing a specific part of the task. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the request to the reason and finally the maintenance issue. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Unfortunately' and 'although', to link ideas. However, the paragraphing could be improved by ensuring each paragraph has a clear topic sentence. Some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. Overall, the message is easy to follow, and the structure is appropriate for a formal letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'keen interest', 'extension', and 'workload'. However, there are some spelling errors ('aggrement', 'washbesin') and minor word choice inaccuracies, such as 'in short time' instead of 'at your earliest convenience'. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. To improve, focus on accurate spelling of common business terms and try to incorporate more precise collocations to convey your message with greater sophistication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'this will going to complete' (should be 'this will be completed') and 'has no enough water' (should be 'does not have enough water'). Additionally, there are punctuation errors, such as missing commas after introductory phrases. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning. To reach a higher band, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of future tense structures, and ensure your sentence construction is consistently accurate.
