Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I would like to express my concern about our agreement on an apartment. Now surprisingly I like this apartment and I want to stay more 6 months in this apartment.

To be honest this place is appropriate for me as it is near to my office as well as my college. As a result it saves my commuting time. in addition to it, it is convenient place as all shopping areas are just near to this apartment. Moreover, I have facility of parking for my car which was not near my old apartment and that was biggest challenge for me. Furthermore, one of my favorite area is balcony where I can relax after busy day while enjoying beautiful sunset in the evening time. Overall, I genuinely liked this place and I want to stay more time here.

Despite having numerous positive sides, there is one challenge in apartment. The air conditioner has been not working properly. I am requesting you to send a mechanic to check the AC. kindly let me know when mechanic can come so I can manage my schedule.

Yours sincerely,

Naina

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly stated your intention to extend the lease for six months, provided a logical explanation for your change in plans (proximity to work/college and parking facilities), and identified a specific maintenance issue regarding the air conditioner. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. To reach a higher band, ensure that your opening is more natural; 'concern about our agreement' sounds slightly negative, whereas a more neutral or positive opening would better reflect your desire to stay. Overall, the task is fully completed with relevant and well-developed ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each serving a clear purpose. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'To be honest', 'As a result', 'In addition to', and 'Furthermore' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. For instance, the transition 'in addition to it' is grammatically awkward. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the request to the reasons for staying, and finally to the maintenance issue. Improving the flow between sentences by varying your linking words would enhance the overall coherence of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'commuting time', 'convenient', and 'maintenance'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'I want to stay more 6 months' should be 'I want to stay for another six months', and 'I have facility of parking' is better phrased as 'I have access to parking'. You also use 'positive sides' where 'advantages' or 'benefits' would be more precise. While your meaning is always clear, expanding your range of collocations would help you achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are several recurring grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('the apartment', 'the mechanic') and awkward phrasing like 'The air conditioner has been not working properly', which should be 'The air conditioner has not been working properly'. Additionally, punctuation is occasionally inconsistent, such as missing commas after introductory phrases. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
