Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Aman,

I am writing to inform you to extend my rent agreement as I am planning to stay for next six months.

This agreement started from March 10th 2026 and completing this August. So, I like if you could extend until March 2027. During my job posting, my period was only six month but right now my company has not a suitable person who can take my place. Therefore, board member increased my period with my permission.

I am really apologize for letting you know so late as I was fully agree at first. After realization, I understood how moving to another city is difficult? I hope you understand my position and extend our agreement.

I also let you know about main door's lock issue. Sometime the fop key does not work and I have to wait for long time till it resest automatically. I hope you will figur

Best,

Mandeep

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt: the duration of the extension, the reason for the change, and the maintenance issue. However, the response is incomplete as it ends abruptly mid-sentence ('I hope you will figur'). This lack of a proper closing and the unfinished sentence significantly impacts the overall task completion. While the ideas are relevant, the development is hindered by the abrupt ending, which prevents the letter from being a fully functional piece of communication. To improve, ensure you complete all sentences and include a formal sign-off.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the flow is occasionally disrupted by awkward phrasing and grammatical errors, such as 'So, I like if you could extend'. Cohesive devices are used, but they are sometimes mechanical or misused, such as the transition 'After realization'. The abrupt ending of the letter also negatively affects the overall coherence, as the final point about the door lock is left unresolved. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring a logical, complete progression of ideas would enhance the score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for a semi-formal letter, but there are several instances of unnatural word choice and collocation errors. For example, 'completing this August' should be 'is completed in August', and 'fop key' is likely a misspelling of 'fob key'. Phrases like 'board member increased my period' are slightly unnatural in this context. While the meaning is generally clear, the range is limited, and the errors in word choice occasionally draw attention. Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise collocations for business and housing contexts would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'I am really apologize' (should be 'I really apologize'), 'my company has not a suitable person' (should be 'does not have'), and 'I was fully agree' (should be 'I fully agreed'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of question marks where they are not needed. While the meaning is usually understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focus on subject-verb agreement and correct verb forms.
