IELTS Writing Task 1 question
Five months ago, you started renting an apartment on a six-month agreement. You now wish to stay in the apartment for longer than the six months you originally agreed with the owner.
Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter
- say how long you now want to rent the apartment for
- explain why your plans have changed
- tell the owner about a problem in the apartment
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir/Mam,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to inform you that I want to stay in this apartment for more than a year. As we know, this is a six-month agreement but I firmly believe that it should be extended to one more year.
Honestly, I love the time which I spent here and now I fell for this place due to the amenities such as swimming pool, cafeteria and its own parking. Moreover, it is closer to my college, which further saves my time of travelling and makes my life efficient and convenient.
However, I also want to address an issue which is annoying and cannot be tolerable. The central air-conditioner of the apartment is not functioning properly for the last two weeks. Due to the summer season, it is difficult to manage all the tasks in the apartment. Hence, I would highly urge you to fix this problem at your earliest convenience.
Yours faithfully,
Harshpreet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state your intention to extend the lease for a year, provide a logical reason for the change (convenience and amenities), and describe the air-conditioning issue. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific details about the air-conditioning issue, such as whether it is making a noise or simply blowing warm air, to further enhance the task response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each point, and a polite closing. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'However', and 'Hence' to link your ideas effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the request. The flow of information is smooth, and the reader can easily follow your argument. To improve further, ensure that the transition between the request for extension and the complaint about the air-conditioner feels slightly more natural, perhaps by acknowledging the landlord's previous help before introducing the problem.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, such as 'amenities', 'efficient', and 'convenient'. The language is generally natural and appropriate for the context. There are a few minor issues with collocation, such as 'fell for this place' (which is slightly informal) and 'cannot be tolerable' (which is a bit awkward; 'intolerable' or 'unacceptable' would be better). However, these do not impede communication. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations related to property management, such as 'lease extension' or 'maintenance request'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most sentences are error-free, and the meaning is always clear. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'the time which I spent here' (should be 'have spent') and 'for the last two weeks' (should be 'has not been functioning for the last two weeks'). Despite these occasional errors, your control of grammar is strong, and the punctuation is accurate. The use of modal verbs like 'would highly urge' is appropriate for the formal tone of the letter.
