IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Five months ago, you started renting an apartment on a six-month agreement. You now wish to stay in the apartment for longer than the six months you originally agreed with the owner.

Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter

  • say how long you now want to rent the apartment for
  • explain why your plans have changed
  • tell the owner about a problem in the apartment

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I write to you with the intent of apprising you of the plan that has, of late, become a source of convenience for me. Apparently, there was an agreement to stay in this apartment for the half-yearly. Since I have been living in this posh area for five months, I now want to stay for another six months.

At first, my studies were for six months, but I enrolled in the next course at the same university. As an outcome, I need to stay further six months as it is closer to this apartment. It will be convenient for me to go from this area because it takes only ten minutes to go on foot.

Along with this, I seek your firm support to maintenance of my room's door as it is not locked properly. I have my vital educational documents, identification documents, and other stuff.

I look forward to your proactive support and prompt action.

Yours faithfully,

Amy

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly stated the desired extension period, provided a logical reason for the change in plans regarding your university course, and identified a specific maintenance issue with the door. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. However, the opening paragraph is slightly wordy and uses somewhat unnatural phrasing, such as 'apprising you of the plan that has, of late, become a source of convenience'. While the task is fully completed, the expression of ideas could be more direct and natural to better suit the context of a formal request.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter follows a logical structure with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the task, which aids readability. You have used some cohesive devices, such as 'Along with this' and 'As an outcome', to link your ideas. However, the transition between the opening statement and the main purpose of the letter is slightly mechanical. The use of referencing is generally clear, and the paragraphing is appropriate for a short formal letter. To improve, ensure that your linking phrases feel more integrated into the flow of the sentences rather than acting as rigid signposts.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'apprising', 'proactive', and 'convenience'. However, some word choices are slightly unnatural or misused, such as 'the half-yearly' (which is not standard for a rental agreement) and 'maintenance of my room's door' (where 'repair' would be more precise). The phrase 'other stuff' is too informal for this type of correspondence. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, you should focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring that your register remains consistently formal throughout the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'I need to stay further six months' (should be 'for a further six months') and 'go on foot' (while correct, 'walk' is more natural). The sentence 'I write to you with the intent of apprising you...' is grammatically complex but slightly clunky. Punctuation is generally accurate, and your errors do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, focus on refining your use of prepositions and articles, and try to incorporate a wider variety of error-free complex structures to demonstrate greater control.
