IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Five months ago, you started renting an apartment on a six-month agreement. You now wish to stay in the apartment for longer than the six months you originally agreed with the owner.

Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter

  • say how long you now want to rent the apartment for
  • explain why your plans have changed
  • tell the owner about a problem in the apartment

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear landlord,

I hope all is well.

My name is Shivam, and I have been renting your apartment since March,2026.

I am writing this letter to express my interest of extending a lease of my current stay period. Actually, the thing is that initially I signed the lease contract for six months which is expiring in this month.

However, I have come up with an interest of extending the lease for another six months if possible. I know, it is little too late to inform you, but I am planning to invite my parents for a short visit to attend the my college graduation ceremony. Also, the apartment is facilitated with all the basic amenities which will ease the stay of my parents.

In addition, along with the lease extension proposal I would also like to draw your attention on the parking problem that I have been facing for a while now. There is always someone who parks his car on my assigned place so that I would like you to take initiative and clear this problem on my behalf.

I hope to hear back from you with green flag for lease extension.

Thank you and have a pleasant day.

Sincerely,

Shivam Desai

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points required by the task. You clearly stated the desired extension period, provided a logical reason for the change (parents' visit for graduation), and identified a specific issue regarding the parking space. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. To reach a higher band, ensure that the transition between the request and the complaint is slightly more fluid, but overall, the task requirements are fully met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the introduction to the request, the explanation, the complaint, and finally the closing. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate these distinct points. You use some cohesive devices such as 'However', 'In addition', and 'Also' to link your ideas. While the flow is generally good, some of the linking phrases are a bit mechanical. Improving the variety of transition words and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'this problem') is always clear will help elevate the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'facilitated', 'amenities', and 'assigned place'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'express my interest of extending a lease' (should be 'in extending') and 'the apartment is facilitated with' (should be 'equipped with'). Additionally, 'green flag' is an informal idiom that is slightly out of place in a formal request. Despite these minor issues, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and effectively throughout the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'the thing is that initially I signed' (slightly informal phrasing), 'the my college' (unnecessary article), and 'parks his car on my assigned place' (should be 'in'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on article usage and prepositional collocations. The majority of your sentences are clear, and the punctuation is generally accurate, which supports the overall readability of the letter.
