IELTS Writing Task 1 question
Five months ago, you started renting an apartment on a six-month agreement. You now wish to stay in the apartment for longer than the six months you originally agreed with the owner.
Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter
- say how long you now want to rent the apartment for
- explain why your plans have changed
- tell the owner about a problem in the apartment
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Madam,
I hope this letter finds you well. As you know we agreed for a 6-month lease for my rental apartment and now I am planning to for another a year this time.
I want you to know that it is not a sudden plan for staying here more than the decided time period. Eventually, I moved here because I was looking for a job at that time and now you also know that I have got on and it is close to this location. Additionally, there are tons of places like, restaurants, local markets, bus stops etc. All these make me feel like it would be better if I stay here for a little longer.
Moreover, I like this place and the energy of this home. Although I just want you to pay attention to the main power socket, or it say electricity board. I noticed weird noises coming out of that, also it has dropped maybe 3-4 times over the last few weeks. So, that would be everything.
I hope you understand my situation. I will wait for a positive response from your side.
Thank you,
Yours truly
Heena

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly stated your intention to extend the lease for one year, provided a logical explanation regarding your new job and the convenience of the location, and identified a specific maintenance issue with the power socket. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. To reach a higher band, ensure that your explanation of the change in plans is more concise and that the transition between the request and the maintenance issue is smoother. Overall, the task is fully addressed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the task. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'Moreover', and 'Although' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. For instance, the phrasing 'I want you to know that...' and 'So, that would be everything' are a bit informal and could be replaced with more sophisticated linking phrases to improve the flow of the letter. The progression of ideas is clear throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'lease', 'location', and 'maintenance' (implied). However, there are some instances of imprecise word choice, such as 'got on' (which is unclear in this context) and 'energy of this home'. The phrase 'or it say electricity board' is also awkward and lacks clarity. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding informal phrasal verbs. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning, it lacks the flexibility and precision required for a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'we agreed for a 6-month lease' (should be 'agreed on'), 'planning to for another a year' (incorrect preposition and article usage), and 'it has dropped' (referring to the power socket, 'tripped' would be the correct term). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but there are minor errors in sentence construction. Increasing your control over prepositions and verb tenses will help you achieve a higher score.
