Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Owner,

Hoping you are doing well. As the tanent of apartment number 13, I know my signed lease is going to be over in next month. But, unfotunatly my company want me to stay little longer for some extra work they have for me. because of, the longer stay, I need to extend my lease aggrement for another month, Hoping you will accept it. I will fill all of the necessary paperwork to be on the safe side. However, In my apartment, there is a leak in the bathroom sink that needs to be fixed immidetly. The water is driping drop by drop under the sink counter and I am worried, it will damage the counter by soaking it. If you can ask the maintainence guy to fix it for me and have a look toward extending my lease that will be a huge favour for me. Thank you so much in advance.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: stating the desired extension length, explaining the change in plans, and reporting the maintenance issue. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. However, the development of ideas is somewhat brief. For instance, while you mention your company requires you to stay, providing a slightly more specific reason would have strengthened the letter. Additionally, the request to fix the sink and the request to extend the lease are combined into one final sentence, which makes the conclusion feel a bit rushed. Overall, the task is fulfilled, but more elaboration would lead to a higher score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the purpose of the letter to the specific request and finally the maintenance issue. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. For example, the transition 'because of, the longer stay' is grammatically awkward and disrupts the flow. Paragraphing is also missing; the entire letter is written as a single block of text. In a formal letter, it is essential to use clear paragraph breaks to separate the introduction, the main body points, and the closing. Improving the variety of linking words and using proper paragraph structure would significantly enhance the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to communicate your message clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'lease agreement' and 'maintenance'. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'tanent' (tenant), 'unfotunatly' (unfortunately), 'aggrement' (agreement), 'immidetly' (immediately), and 'driping' (dripping). These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable, though they do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning. To reach a higher band, you should focus on accuracy in spelling and attempt to use more precise collocations, such as 'renew the lease' rather than just 'extend my lease'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

Your writing shows a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'my company want me' (should be 'wants'), 'I will fill all of the necessary paperwork' (should be 'complete'), and the punctuation error in 'because of, the longer stay'. The use of commas is inconsistent, and some sentence constructions are slightly unnatural. While you attempt complex sentences, the frequency of errors in basic subject-verb agreement and word order prevents a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for these common errors will help you achieve greater accuracy in your future writing tasks.
