Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter

  • say how long you now want to rent the apartment for
  • explain why your plans have changed
  • tell the owner about a problem in the apartment

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mr.Mathew,

Hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to extend my stay in an apartment, where I have been living for the past six months.

I have been living in the Mahogany Community. Since, this place is close to my workplace, I rent the apartment for my residence Thus, I decided to extend my contract for one more year instead of going anywhere else. This area not only provides all the amenities but it also provides community services, particularly access of library, beach and swimming classes for my children.

My company offers me to complete one more project. This project will take one year to complete it. Our company manager was impressed from my excellent work, thereby he offered me a role of supervisor. As a result, my plans are changed to extend my stay in the workplace and accommodation.

I would really appreciate it if you could extend my lease from six months to one more year. Living here makes me feel comfortable and safe; however, I found a problem in the air conditioner . Sometimes, an apartment gets hotter in the afternoon due to sunlight. I kindly request you to fix this problem as soon as possible to make this place more enjoyable.

Thank you for considering my request. I look forward to hearing a prompt response.

Yours faithfully,

Harjot

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly stated the desired extension period, provided a logical explanation for your change in plans regarding your work project, and identified a specific maintenance issue with the air conditioner. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements. To reach a higher band, ensure that the transition between the explanation of your work situation and the request for the lease extension is more seamless, as the current structure feels slightly repetitive regarding your employment status.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which aids readability. You use some cohesive devices such as 'As a result' and 'however' to link ideas. However, there are some minor issues with flow; for example, the sentence 'Since, this place is close to my workplace, I rent the apartment for my residence' is slightly awkward and disrupts the progression. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the overall cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'prompt response' and 'amenities' are used correctly. There are some minor collocation errors, such as 'access of library' (should be 'access to the library') and 'impressed from my excellent work' (should be 'impressed by'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise word choice. Expanding your range to include more sophisticated collocations related to property and professional contexts would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'my plans are changed' (should be 'my plans have changed') and 'This project will take one year to complete it' (the 'it' is redundant). Additionally, there are minor punctuation errors, such as the unnecessary comma after 'Since'. Despite these errors, your control of grammar is generally good, and the mistakes do not cause confusion for the reader. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and avoiding redundant pronouns will improve your accuracy.
