Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Ram,

I am writing this letter to you regarding the lease of the flat where I was shifted 5 month ago. Intially it was 6 month agreement, but now due to change in my plan I and willing to extend the lease. Details are mentioned bellow.

I want to extend the lease of the apartment for one more year after the coming month. As my job has extended my contract with them for more 24 months. Also in winter my parents are coming to visit me and explore the city so they could stay with me here as well.

I has recently noticed the roof of the living living has a leak on the right side coner near the balcony. I had noticed that when anyone is taking bath on the upper floor theire are droplets of water on the roof. I think there is a leakage in the pipeline.

Before renewing the lease I want you to fix this issue otherwise it is going to be an issue for me in futre.

Your loving,

Ishika Mistry

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the task: the desired duration of the extension, the reason for the change in plans, and the maintenance issue. The tone is appropriate for a formal request to a landlord. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, though the development could be slightly more sophisticated. For instance, the explanation regarding the parents' visit is a good addition to support the request. The purpose of the letter is clear from the outset, and the reader is left in no doubt about the writer's intentions. Overall, the response fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each serving a clear purpose. There is a logical progression of ideas from the introduction to the request, the explanation, and finally the maintenance issue. Cohesive devices such as 'Also', 'As', and 'Before' are used to link sentences and ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow could be improved with more varied cohesive devices. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different topics, which helps the reader follow the structure of the letter easily. The overall arrangement is coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their message clearly. There are some attempts at more specific vocabulary, such as 'renewing the lease' and 'extend the lease'. However, there are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'shifted' instead of 'moved', 'bellow' instead of 'below', and 'coner' instead of 'corner'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the score. To reach a higher band, the writer should focus on more precise collocations and ensure spelling accuracy for common words.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The letter uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'I and willing' instead of 'I am willing', 'I has recently noticed' instead of 'I have recently noticed', and 'theire are' instead of 'there are'. These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding the message. The punctuation is generally functional, though some minor errors persist. Increasing the variety of complex structures and proofreading for subject-verb agreement would help improve the accuracy and range.
