IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Five months ago, you started renting an apartment on a six-month agreement. You now wish to stay in the apartment for longer than the six months you originally agreed with the owner.

Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter

  • say how long you now want to rent the apartment for
  • explain why your plans have changed
  • tell the owner about a problem in the apartment

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I hope You are doing well. I am sathyaprakash, I am a student studying masters in York University. I am tenant in one of your apartment which is in Danforth avenue, Toronto. I am writing this letter with regard to extending my rental agreement which is initially agreed for six-months.

I wish to stay in this apartment for next six months. now i am in the 5th month of the initial contract, so, I wanted to change the period from 6 months to 12 months, then I can stay here six more months.

As a said earlier, that I am a student and I am planning to do additional course which will take 6 months to complete and also I don't wanted to shift my room by next months because this location is very convenient for me.

And also, I had one problem in my apartment that the furniture in living room is broken and its not my fault, it was broken before I came and I noticed that last week, I tried to keep that in another room but it feels cumbersome. I am wondering If you could do anything with that.

Looking forward for your response.

Thankyou

Yours Respectfully

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: the duration of the extension, the reason for the change, and the issue with the furniture. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal request to a landlord. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, the explanation regarding the furniture is a bit vague, and the request for action could be more clearly articulated. While the task requirements are fully met, the response would benefit from more sophisticated elaboration to reach a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each serving a clear purpose. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive (e.g., 'And also' is used twice to start sentences). There is a lack of variety in linking words, which makes the flow feel slightly disjointed at times. Improving the range of transition signals would enhance the overall cohesion of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to convey their message clearly. There are some instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'I don't wanted to shift my room' and 'I am sathyaprakash'. While the student uses some relevant terms like 'rental agreement' and 'convenient', the range is limited. There are also minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'do additional course' instead of 'take an additional course', which do not impede communication but limit the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb tenses and subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'I am tenant', 'I don't wanted', 'As a said earlier'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some sentences lacking proper capitalization or ending with incorrect punctuation. While the meaning is always clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on basic grammatical accuracy and proofreading for tense consistency would be highly beneficial.
