Five months ago, you started renting an apartment on a six-month agreement. You now wish to stay in the apartment for longer than the six months you originally agreed with the owner.
Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter
- say how long you now want to rent the apartment for
- explain why your plans have changed
- tell the owner about a problem in the apartment
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
I hope You are doing well. I am sathyaprakash, I am a student studying masters in York University. I am tenant in one of your apartment which is in Danforth avenue, Toronto. I am writing this letter with regard to extending my rental agreement which is initially agreed for six-months.
I wish to stay in this apartment for next six months. now i am in the 5th month of the initial contract, so, I wanted to change the period from 6 months to 12 months, then I can stay here six more months.
As a said earlier, that I am a student and I am planning to do additional course which will take 6 months to complete and also I don't wanted to shift my room by next months because this location is very convenient for me.
And also, I had one problem in my apartment that the furniture in living room is broken and its not my fault, it was broken before I came and I noticed that last week, I tried to keep that in another room but it feels cumbersome. I am wondering If you could do anything with that. Looking forward for your response. Thankyou
Yours Respectfully

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt: the duration of the extension, the reason for the change in plans, and the furniture issue. The tone is appropriate for a formal request to a landlord. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, the explanation regarding the furniture is a bit vague, and the request for action could be more clearly articulated. While the task is fully addressed, the level of detail is sufficient rather than comprehensive, which aligns with the descriptors for a Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'As a said earlier' and 'And also', though some of these transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. The use of referencing (e.g., 'that location') is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be improved with more varied linking words. Overall, the structure is coherent, and the paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different requirements of the task.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate their needs effectively. There are some attempts at more specific vocabulary, such as 'cumbersome' and 'convenient', which are used correctly. However, there are some minor errors in word choice and phrasing, such as 'I don't wanted to shift my room' (should be 'move') and 'I had one problem' (should be 'I have a problem'). The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but it lacks the flexibility and precision required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'I am tenant in one of your apartment' (missing articles and pluralization), 'As a said earlier' (incorrect article), and 'I don't wanted' (incorrect verb tense). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede the overall communication of the message. Punctuation is generally functional, though there are some issues with comma splices and capitalization. The control of grammar is consistent with a Band 6.0, where errors are present but rarely cause confusion.
