IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Five months ago, you started renting an apartment on a six-month agreement. You now wish to stay in the apartment for longer than the six months you originally agreed with the owner.

Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter

  • say how long you now want to rent the apartment for
  • explain why your plans have changed
  • tell the owner about a problem in the apartment

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I hope you are doing very well. I am writing this letter to inform you that I want to extend my agreement.

As I signed on a six-months agreement five years ago. However, there are a few reasons for that I have to stay more than my agreement. I came to here for my full-time job, but I am looking for part-time study to make my profile more strong. Master of Business Administration is 2 years long course which I want to study to obtain more knowledge about business. Thus, I will glade if you allowed me stay more.

Moreover, I want to promote my self to the manager post, because of that I need to obtain certificate in that program. Thus, I have changed my plan to stay more.

Apart from this, there are few issues that I would prefer you to solve them, as I am going to stay one year more. I struggle to get hot water, and often I have to take shower of cold water.

Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to your prompt action.

Yours faithfully,

Tasneem.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter covers all three bullet points: the duration of the extension, the reason for the change, and the maintenance issue. However, the development of ideas is somewhat repetitive and occasionally confusing. For instance, the mention of 'five years ago' contradicts the prompt's 'five months ago'. The explanation regarding the MBA and the promotion is slightly disjointed, making the reasoning feel less cohesive. While the task is addressed, the content lacks the clarity and logical flow required for a higher band. To improve, ensure that the details provided are consistent with the prompt and that the explanation of plans is more concise and logically structured.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly inaccurate, such as the repetitive use of 'Thus' and 'Moreover'. The transition between the explanation of the plans and the maintenance issue is abrupt. While the overall progression is clear, the logical flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'that program') is clear and precise. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, but the internal cohesion needs more refinement.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but there are several instances of awkward phrasing and word choice errors. Examples include 'make my profile more strong' (should be 'strengthen my profile'), 'glade if you allowed me' (should be 'glad if you would allow me'), and 'take shower of cold water' (should be 'take a cold shower'). These errors do not impede communication, but they demonstrate a limited range and some inaccuracy. To reach a higher band, focus on using more natural collocations and avoiding literal translations from your first language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Issues include tense inconsistencies ('I signed on a six-months agreement five years ago'), article usage ('the manager post'), and prepositional errors ('I came to here'). While the meaning is generally clear, these errors are noticeable and occur throughout the text. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Increasing the frequency of error-free sentences by proofreading for basic grammatical rules will significantly improve your score in this criterion.
