Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Max,

I hope this email finds you well. I am writing this letter to request for extension of house agreement from six months to one year i.e till 15th August 2027 , and also to bring your attention towards leakage in the kitchen sink.

The original plan of staying in this apartment for six months was based upon my job location which is near to this apartment. Additionally, I was in probation period and was skeptical about my company's decision of extending my work permit.

I was on cloud nine yesterday after receiving company's confirmation about extending my work tenure by 12 months. I would like to request you to please consider my plea of extending agreement.

Now, speaking of the leakage in the kitchen sink, I am experiencing this issue from past three days. I tried my best to fix the issues by doing some minor fix in the sink pipe but the issue remains the same. Could you please come today or tomorrow to check the sink and fix the issue?

Please let me know if I need to sign a new agreement or we can discuss on call.

Thank you for your attention.

Yours Sincerely,

Abhishek B

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state the desired extension period, provide a logical explanation for your change in plans regarding your job and work permit, and effectively describe the maintenance issue with the kitchen sink. The tone is appropriate for a formal request to a landlord. The purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning, and the ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements. You have maintained a consistent and professional tone throughout the correspondence, which is essential for this type of task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is well-organized with clear paragraphing that separates the request for extension from the maintenance issue. Each paragraph has a clear central topic. You use cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'Now, speaking of', and 'Therefore' (implied) to link ideas. The progression of information is logical, moving from the request to the justification, and finally to the maintenance problem. The use of referencing is clear, and the letter flows smoothly from start to finish, making it easy for the reader to follow your intentions.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, including idiomatic expressions like 'on cloud nine' and professional phrasing such as 'work tenure' and 'probation period'. While the vocabulary is generally effective, there are minor issues with collocation, such as 'request for extension of house agreement' (should be 'an extension of my rental agreement') and 'doing some minor fix' (should be 'minor repairs'). However, these minor inaccuracies do not impede communication, and you successfully use a variety of words to convey your message clearly and appropriately for the context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'request for extension of house agreement' (missing articles) and 'experiencing this issue from past three days' (should be 'for the past three days'). Additionally, 'receiving company's confirmation' requires an article ('the company's'). Despite these occasional errors, the majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control of grammar is sufficient to convey your meaning without any confusion. Punctuation is generally accurate, and the letter is easy to read.
