Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mr. Smith,

I am writing to request you that I want to extend our agreement as I know it was for six month but now for certain reason I want to stay here four months more.

My plan has been changed because of my job schedule. According to the supervisor it will start next month but now he emailed me it will start after four months that's why I have to be continue my present job until my new job will not started.

I want to highlight some issues of your apartment which you have to be solved on your first priority. Firstly, bathroom sink tap is not working, secondly, in kitchen there is very small space to organize utensils, if possible there is a place for one cupboard which is needed just above the sink. Furthermore, there is no storage space that's why the apartment is very disorganize and things cluttered easily and I find it difficult to looking them when I want to use them.

I hope you will consider my situation and take the necessary action at your earliest convenience. I look forward to receiving your response.

Yours faithfully,

Tina

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter covers all three bullet points: the duration of the extension, the reason for the change in plans, and the maintenance issues. However, the tone is occasionally blunt, particularly in the request for repairs ('which you have to be solved on your first priority'), which lacks the polite, formal register expected in a letter to a landlord. The explanation regarding the job schedule is slightly confusing due to grammatical errors, making the logic harder to follow. While the task is fully addressed, the development of ideas is somewhat hindered by the lack of clarity in the expression.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each addressing a specific requirement of the prompt. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'secondly', and 'Furthermore' are used to structure the list of complaints. However, the flow within sentences is sometimes interrupted by awkward phrasing and run-on structures, such as in the second paragraph. The use of referencing is occasionally unclear, which affects the overall progression of ideas. Despite these issues, the letter remains easy to follow and the paragraphing is appropriate for the task.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate their needs effectively. There are some attempts at more specific vocabulary, such as 'utensils' and 'cluttered', but there are also instances of imprecise word choice, such as 'disorganize' (should be 'disorganized') and 'looking them' (should be 'looking for them'). The range is sufficient to convey the message, but it lacks the sophistication and precision required for a higher band score. Spelling is generally accurate, but the word-choice errors occasionally draw attention.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there is a high frequency of grammatical errors. Examples include 'request you that I want to', 'it will start after four months that's why I have to be continue', and 'which you have to be solved'. These errors, particularly with verb tenses and passive voice construction, are noticeable. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequent errors in basic grammar and sentence construction prevent the writing from reaching a higher band. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some run-on sentences lacking necessary conjunctions or full stops.
