IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Five months ago, you started renting an apartment on a six-month agreement. You now wish to stay in the apartment for longer than the six months you originally agreed with the owner.

Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter

  • say how long you now want to rent the apartment for
  • explain why your plans have changed
  • tell the owner about a problem in the apartment

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mr. Carlo,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to ask you to extend my rental agreement, which is supposed to end in next month.

I would like to rent the apartment for at least one year. According to my recent rental agreement I have to leave this place in next month, but due to some compelling reasons, I have to stay longer.

Currently, I am working for Sun Rise Company, and they mentioned that I have to work on the same project untill next year. So I decided to stay on the same place because of it's convenient location and the facilities I access.

Although the place itself is truly convenient, there are certain parts needing quick attention, such as the heating system is not working properly, which makes nights uncomfortable. In addition, the leakage in kitchnen sink can cause accidental problems, especially during night.

Before signing the agreement, I would like to request you to look into this matter and send someone professional to invesigate this problem.

I look forward to your prompt response.

Yours faithfully,

Deepika

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the task. You clearly state the desired extension period (one year), explain the change in plans due to your work project, and identify specific maintenance issues (heating and kitchen sink). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, ensure that the transition between the request for an extension and the maintenance issues is slightly more fluid, though the current structure is perfectly functional for a General Training Task 1.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for the request and the issues, and a formal closing. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate distinct topics. You use cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'In addition', and 'So' to link ideas. While some transitions are slightly mechanical, the progression of ideas is easy to follow throughout the text. The referencing is clear, and the overall structure supports the reader's understanding of your request.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'compelling reasons', 'convenient location', and 'prompt response'. There are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'kitchnen' (kitchen) and 'invesigate' (investigate). Additionally, 'accidental problems' is a slightly unnatural collocation in this context. However, these errors do not impede communication, and you successfully convey your meaning with a sufficient range of vocabulary to handle the task requirements.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'in next month' (should be 'next month'), 'it's convenient' (should be 'its'), and 'the leakage in kitchnen sink' (missing article 'the'). Despite these errors, the majority of your sentences are clear and error-free. The use of complex structures, such as 'Although the place itself is truly convenient, there are certain parts needing quick attention', shows a good attempt at variety. The errors present are non-systematic and do not cause confusion.
