Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Linda,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to inform you that I have decided to extend my rent agreement from six months to one year. I feel more homely in this apartment therefore I do not want to move anywhere else.
Moving further, I have a reason to stay here, I have enrolled myself in a new course which will be completed in next year. Secondly, my college is just five minutes walk from this home. These are the two causes which do not allow me to go any other apartment.
In the end, I have some issues to which I want to confront with you. One is that I need shower filter in the washroom as we all know that Canada has supply of hard water, which is not good for skin . Apart from this, we all face cold in the day and night time so it is request to please decrease the temperature so that we can get good sleep in night.
I hope you will resolve these problems and extend my agreement.
Yours faithfully,
Anju Pal.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly stated the desired extension period, provided logical reasons for your change in plans (a new course and proximity to college), and identified a maintenance issue regarding the shower filter and heating. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a landlord, and the purpose of the communication is clear throughout. To improve, you could provide slightly more detail regarding the 'problem' to ensure the landlord understands the urgency or specific nature of the request, but overall, the task requirements are fully met.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moving further', 'Secondly', and 'Apart from this' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. For instance, the phrase 'Moving further' is not the most natural way to introduce a new point in a letter. Additionally, the referencing in the third paragraph ('issues to which I want to confront with you') is slightly awkward. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would help elevate the flow of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'enrolled myself in a new course' and 'extend my agreement' are used correctly. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'I feel more homely' is slightly unnatural; 'I feel at home' or 'I have settled in well' would be better. Similarly, 'confront with you' is incorrect; you should use 'discuss with you' or 'bring to your attention'. Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise collocations would improve your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors. For example, 'which will be completed in next year' should be 'next year' (no 'in'). The phrase 'these are the two causes which do not allow me to go any other apartment' contains a preposition error ('go to any other apartment'). Additionally, 'it is request to please decrease' is missing an article ('it is a request'). Despite these errors, they do not impede communication, and your control of basic sentence structures is generally sound.
