Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writting in regard to extend my tenant agreement as my plans have changed. I moved to this apartment as it was closer to my institution a five month ago.

Initially my course duration was only six month, but now they extend it to four months more. As suddenly it would be hard for me to find another accommodation while doing my study. I would like to stay in this apartment for few months more.

After finishing my study I can move back to I my town and work there but only for now I must need to stay here. Although, I also would like to bring your attention toward the apartment repair. As the washroom roof demand some repair, It is coming mouldy. Furthermore, the floor of kitchen also broken from many places. It is going to take only one week for the washroom and kitchen fixing.

I hope you would consider my request and extend my tenant agreement by four months as well as apartment repair work.

Yours faithfully,

Joker

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt: the duration of the extension, the reason for the change, and the maintenance issues. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the explanation regarding the course extension is a bit repetitive, and the description of the apartment repairs could be more precise to ensure the landlord understands the urgency. Despite these minor points, all parts of the task are addressed, and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'Initially', 'Furthermore', and 'Although' are used to link sentences and ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are instances where the flow is interrupted by awkward phrasing, such as 'As suddenly it would be hard for me'. While the overall arrangement is coherent, the use of cohesive devices could be more natural and varied to achieve a higher band score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate their needs effectively. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'accommodation' and 'institution'. However, there are several errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'writting in regard to extend' (should be 'writing regarding extending') and 'demand some repair' (should be 'requires repair'). The phrase 'coming mouldy' is also non-standard. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over word forms and collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The letter uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('the floor of kitchen also broken') and tense inconsistencies ('a five month ago'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are errors in sentence construction, such as the fragment 'As suddenly it would be hard for me to find another accommodation while doing my study.' While the meaning remains clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. More attention to basic grammar rules and sentence structure would improve the accuracy significantly.
