Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Tony,
I hope you are doing well.
I am writing this email in regards of extending my lease to few more months. Five months ago, I rented this beautiful apartment with a lease of 6 months. As the lease is coming to an end, I would like to request you for me to extend my stay for six more months.
The reason I made my decision to stay longer is that, I got an 6-month internship here in this city. Despite being a work from home internship, there will be certain days of week when I will have to go in-person to my office.
However, this place is very comfortable and convinient in every perspect of my living, I would like to draw your attention to one issue that I am facing in your apartment. There have been sightings of bed bugs in the apartment, so I suggest you to put a request for pest control as soon as possible. Although, the sightings is low, I do not want it to spread further more.
I would really appreciate your help in this matter.
I am looking forward for your email.
Yours sincerely,
Peter

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: the duration of the extension, the reason for the change in plans (the internship), and the issue regarding bed bugs. The tone is appropriate for a formal request to a landlord. The ideas are clearly presented and the purpose of the letter is immediately evident. The response is well-structured and covers all requirements of the prompt effectively, ensuring the reader understands both the request and the maintenance issue.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific point, which helps the reader follow the narrative easily. Cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Although', and 'As the lease is coming to an end' are used effectively to link sentences and ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the overall structure is coherent and easy to follow throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is generally appropriate and sufficient for the task. There are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'convinient' (convenient), 'perspect' (perspective), and 'in regards of' (in regard to). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. The student uses some good phrases like 'draw your attention to' and 'extend my stay', which demonstrate a reasonable level of lexical control for this type of correspondence.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'an 6-month internship' (a 6-month), 'days of week' (days of the week), and 'sightings is low' (sightings are low). Additionally, 'I am looking forward for your email' should be 'I am looking forward to your email'. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout, and the grammatical mistakes do not cause confusion for the reader.
