IELTS Writing Task 1 question
Five months ago, you started renting an apartment on a six-month agreement. You now wish to stay in the apartment for longer than the six months you originally agreed with the owner.
Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter
- say how long you now want to rent the apartment for
- explain why your plans have changed
- tell the owner about a problem in the apartment
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter regarding our six- month rental agreement. I would like to extend my stay in the apartment longer than the period we agreed.
I would like to request further extension to twelve months after the completion of six-month agreement.
I was initially working on a contract for six months. However, my employer has offered me to continue working in the same company for another one year. I would like to take this opportunity as I am quite sastified with my job and foresee growth as well. Additionally, my accommodation is close to my workplace which makes the commute easier. Therefore, it would be convenient for me to stay in the same appartment.
I would also like to bring your attention to a problem in the apartment that I am recently facing. The kitchen sink is leaking for past one week which leads to water accumulation underneath the cabinet. I am afraid it will lead to further damage if it is not fixed timely.
I will be grateful if you could allow me to rent the apartment for another twelve months and get the kitchen sink repaired at your earliest convenience. I am looking forward to a prompt response.
Yours sincerely,
John

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The student effectively addresses all parts of the task by stating the intention to extend the rental agreement to twelve months, explaining the change in plans due to job security, and mentioning a problem with the kitchen sink. However, some sentences could be clearer to improve overall effectiveness. The task could still benefit from a more direct connection between the new rental terms and the problem in the apartment. Overall, the response shows a good understanding of the task requirements but would be stronger with more elaboration on the request for repair.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is generally coherent, with a logical flow of ideas from the request for extension to the explanation of changed circumstances, followed by the mention of the apartment issue. Minor issues arise in linking ideas more fluidly; for instance, transitioning between discussing job stability and the convenient location needs clarification. Overall, while the message is clear, some sentences could be restructured to enhance coherence and make connections more explicit, thus improving the reader's understanding.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The lexical resource is adequate, with appropriate phrases used for the context (e.g., 'extend my stay', 'kitchen sink is leaking'). However, there are instances of informal expressions that could be refined for a more formal tone, such as 'getting the kitchen sink repaired', which could be replaced with 'arranging for the repairs to be carried out'. Additionally, there are some misspellings (e.g. 'sastified' should be 'satisfied', 'appartment' should be 'apartment') that detract from the lexical quality.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
Grammatical range and accuracy are mostly appropriate, with well-structured sentences and good variety in the use of clauses. However, there are a few grammatical errors that hinder clarity, such as 'is leaking for past one week' which should be 'has been leaking for the past week', and 'I would like to request further extension to twelve months' which should be 'I would like to request an extension of twelve months'. Addressing these minor flaws would improve overall grammatical accuracy.
Overall feedback
The letter provides a solid attempt to communicate the request to the owner, effectively addressing the task, but it could be refined further for clarity and precision. To enhance your writing, focus on improving the clarity of your expressions and correcting spelling and grammatical mistakes. Paying attention to transition words and phrases can also improve coherence, allowing readers to follow your points more easily. Additionally, strive to elevate your lexical choices to sound more formal and polished. Overall, a good effort that could benefit from careful proofreading and structuring.
