Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt: the duration of the extension, the reason for the change, and the maintenance issues. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited; for instance, the explanation regarding the job change is repetitive, and the description of the apartment issues could be more precise. Despite these minor points, the purpose of the letter is clear and the reader is fully informed of the situation.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each serving a clear purpose. The use of cohesive devices such as 'However', 'As a result of that', and 'In addition to that' helps to guide the reader through the text. While some transitions are slightly mechanical, the overall progression of ideas is clear. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the request for extension from the maintenance issues, which aids readability and ensures the letter remains coherent throughout.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate their needs clearly. There are some instances of word-choice errors, such as 'smells bed' instead of 'smells bad' and 'liking' instead of 'leaking'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do highlight a need for more precise vocabulary. The range is sufficient for the task, though it lacks the variety and sophistication required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('my boss give me a offer') and tense inconsistencies ('I book this apartment'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with run-on sentences. While these errors are frequent, they rarely prevent the reader from understanding the intended meaning. To improve, the writer should focus on verb tense consistency and proofreading for basic grammatical slips.
