IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Five months ago, you started renting an apartment on a six-month agreement. You now wish to stay in the apartment for longer than the six months you originally agreed with the owner.

Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter

  • say how long you now want to rent the apartment for
  • explain why your plans have changed
  • tell the owner about a problem in the apartment

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mr. John,

I hope this letter finds you in good health. My name is Aman Shah, currently renting your apartment located in Brampton. I am writing this letter to request you for the renewal of our rent agreement.

I moved in your apartment four months ago, since then I have enjoyed my stay in the apartment. The building is surrounded by green spaces which helps me to relax and destress my mind amid the hectic schedule. Along with this, my workplace is really near to the apartment location. My connection with the caring and innocent neighbours have also strengthened since the last few months. Therefore, I aspire to increase the time of my stay in the apartment.

The reason why I signed the six-month agreement only was that I was expecting a transfer in the office to different location. However, due to some reasons, the transfer has been cancelled. Thus, I can stay in this apartment for a longer period of time.

Undoubtedly, the apartment is really beautiful and have all the necessary amenities, however the lighting is giving me some issues. I would really appreciate if you could install few more lights in the living area. This will make the apartment more brighter and would offer me more convenience.

I hope that you would consider my request. I will be looking forward to hear from you.

Yours faithfully,

Aman

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly stated your desire to extend the lease, explained the change in your work circumstances, and identified the lighting issue in the apartment. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord, and the purpose is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the context of a rental agreement. To reach a higher band, ensure that the duration of the extension is specified more precisely, as you mentioned wanting to stay longer but did not provide a specific timeframe (e.g., 'for another six months').

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a distinct aspect of the request, which aids readability. You use cohesive devices such as 'Along with this', 'Therefore', and 'However' to link your ideas effectively. The progression of information is smooth and easy to follow. To improve further, try to vary your transition words slightly more to avoid repetitive structures, and ensure that the connection between the apartment's features and your request for lighting is more tightly integrated.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for a formal letter, such as 'amenities', 'renewal', and 'aspire'. The language is generally natural and precise. There are a few minor collocation issues, such as 'innocent neighbours' (which sounds slightly unnatural; 'friendly' or 'pleasant' would be better) and 'more brighter' (which is a double comparative error). Despite these minor slips, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and effectively throughout the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. Most of your sentences are clear and grammatically sound. However, there are some recurring errors, such as 'the apartment... have all the necessary amenities' (subject-verb agreement error; should be 'has') and 'more brighter' (redundant comparative). Additionally, 'I will be looking forward to hear from you' should be 'looking forward to hearing from you'. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the writing from reaching the highest band for accuracy.
