  • explain why your plans have changed
  • tell the owner about a problem in the apartment

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear ..........................,

I am writing this letter to you about the rental apartment. I hope you are doing well. I just wanted to inform you that i want to live in this apartment more than six months. I want to live here foR next two years.

I never planned to live in this apartment for more than six months but now i reakky love this space i am living in and the main reason is that i found a job on a walking distance from the apartment. So, it will be convinient for me to go to job on everyday basis. The job i got is in the cafe which is nearby the apartment so you also don't need to worry about the rent and we can make a new agreement for the apartment.

Everything here is good but there is one problem in the washroom the shower is not working properly so please fix it as soon as possible.

Best Regards

Thankyou

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt: the duration of the extension, the reason for the change in plans, and the maintenance issue. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a landlord. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, the explanation regarding the job is clear but could be expanded with more professional phrasing to sound more persuasive. The request for the repair is direct, though it lacks a formal closing statement regarding the scheduling of the repair. Overall, the task is fully addressed, but the level of detail is limited.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is quite limited and repetitive. For example, the frequent use of 'I want to' and 'the apartment' makes the flow feel somewhat mechanical. There is a lack of varied linking words or transition phrases to connect sentences more fluidly. While the overall structure is coherent, the internal cohesion within paragraphs could be improved by using a wider range of cohesive devices to better link the ideas together.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and sophistication. The student relies on simple, repetitive language such as 'live in this apartment' and 'good'. There are also some minor errors in word choice, such as 'on a walking distance' (should be 'within walking distance') and 'convinient' (spelling error). While the meaning is always clear, the range of vocabulary is limited to basic, everyday terms. To reach a higher band, the student should incorporate more precise collocations and a broader range of descriptive language relevant to rental agreements and property maintenance.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The letter contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, including punctuation issues (e.g., missing periods between sentences), capitalization errors (e.g., 'i', 'foR'), and spelling mistakes like 'reakky' and 'convinient'. Subject-verb agreement and preposition usage are occasionally inaccurate, such as 'go to job on everyday basis' (should be 'go to work on a daily basis'). While these errors do not prevent the message from being understood, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall fluency and accuracy of the writing.
