Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Mr Smith,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to request you to renew the lease of of your apartment that is about to be finished in a month.

I started living around five months ago in your apartment since I had a six month internship in the company where I am working now. After watching my determination and dedication to the work, my company has offered me a permanent position. As I really like the work environment of the company and the staff is also very cooperative, I have decided to accept the oppertunity.

So, now I am going to stay in the city for two more years. Because I am really enjoying to live in your apartment, I was thinking if we can extend the lease upto two more years. Everything is perfect in the apartment, but there is a request if you can arrange a plumber to fix the bathroom shink as it is having leakage form a long time.

I hope your will consider my humble request and reach me with a positive response.

Yours sincerely,

Harpreet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly stated the desired extension period (two years), provided a logical reason for the change in plans (a permanent job offer), and identified a specific maintenance issue (the leaking bathroom sink). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord, and the purpose of the communication is clear from the outset. The response is well-structured and covers all requirements of the task effectively, demonstrating a clear understanding of the communicative goal.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is well-organized with a logical progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the introduction to the explanation of the situation, the request, and finally the maintenance issue. You used cohesive devices such as 'So', 'Because', and 'As' to link your ideas effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. While the flow is generally smooth, the transition between the job offer and the request for the lease extension could be slightly more refined to improve the overall cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'determination and dedication' and 'cooperative' are used correctly. However, there are some minor spelling errors, such as 'oppertunity' (opportunity) and 'shink' (sink), and a minor collocation issue with 'leakage form' (leakage from). Despite these small slips, the vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows for precise communication. To reach a higher band, focus on eliminating these minor spelling errors and incorporating more sophisticated collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most of your sentences are clear and error-free, which ensures the reader understands your request without difficulty. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'enjoying to live' (should be 'enjoying living') and 'I hope your will consider' (should be 'I hope you will consider'). These errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. Your control over punctuation and sentence structure is generally strong, showing a good level of grammatical competence.
