Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Brock,
I hope your are doing good.Five months ago, I had an agreement with your for renting the apartment for 6 months. As you know that the time is about to end.I want to express somethings to you.
I prefer to stay in the apartment for more than 6 months because I have fallen in love with the house.Me and My family loved the house very much so we have planned to live in the apartment for 2 years. It suits our family very much.
My family is small of four people and it suits us.We have a lot of facilities around the apartment. The best of them is that my workplace is very near the apartment. So I don’t have to travel much for my work.It is at 5 minutes walk away from the apartment. Moreover, a small supermarket is near the apartment so we don’t have to trouble for the grocery or any other stuff. Moreover, my two children are admitted to a nearby school which is one of the famous schools of the decade.I also don’t have problem of dropping them or picking them.
The only problem me and my family are facing is the paint of the walls has become dull and it looks very bad.I arranged a painter to paint the walls but the paint has again become dull. So, I suggest you to arrange a painter and make the conditions of the wall well.
Regards,
Aitzaz

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: the desired duration of the extension, the reasons for the change in plans, and the issue regarding the apartment's paint. The tone is appropriate for a formal request to a landlord. The ideas are relevant and clearly explained, particularly the benefits of the location. To reach a higher band, the student could provide a more specific timeframe for the extension (e.g., 'an additional 18 months') rather than just saying 'more than 6 months', and ensure the request is framed with slightly more professional politeness.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the task. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat repetitive, with 'Moreover' and 'the apartment' appearing frequently. The transition between the explanation of the living situation and the request for repairs is a bit abrupt. Using a wider variety of linking words and better referencing (e.g., using 'the property' or 'this location' instead of repeating 'the apartment') would improve the flow and cohesion of the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to convey their message clearly. There are some instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'don't have to trouble for the grocery' and 'make the conditions of the wall well'. While the student attempts to use descriptive language, some word choices are basic. To improve, the student should focus on more precise collocations and idiomatic expressions suitable for a formal letter, rather than relying on simple, repetitive structures to describe their living situation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'I hope your are doing good' (your/you are), 'agreement with your' (your/you), and 'Me and My family' (My family and I). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after periods in the first paragraph. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct pronoun usage would significantly enhance the accuracy of the writing.
