Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Lokesh,
I am Awalnoor Sethi, tenant of your apartment number 52 located at Marvel Heights. I am writing this letter to request you to extend the renting agreement between us as I wish to stay longer here due to sudden delay in my final exam
I am in my final year of Bachelors of technology and my final exams were supposed to finish this week. But, unexpected orange alert from the weather department regarding rain forced administration to postpone the exams. They may commence next month and all the students have been advised to be present in the town till then. As a result, I have planned to stay longer at your place for two more months.
I hope you understand my situation and agree upon extending my stay. In addition to this, the shower of the bathtub is leaking leading to unnecessary spills and water wastage. I request you to get this fixed as soon as possible.
I will be thankful to you.
Awalnoor Sethi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly stated the desired extension period (two months), provided a logical reason for the change in plans (exam postponement due to weather), and identified a specific maintenance issue (leaking shower). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, ensure that the opening and closing salutations are fully aligned with the formal nature of the request, though your current approach is functional.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the task. You use transition signals such as 'As a result' and 'In addition to this' to guide the reader through your points. The progression of ideas is smooth and easy to follow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, the explanation, and the request for repairs. The cohesion is generally effective, though the flow could be slightly improved by using a wider variety of cohesive devices to link sentences within the paragraphs more fluidly.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'postpone', 'commence', and 'unnecessary spills' correctly. There are no significant spelling errors that impede communication. However, the vocabulary is somewhat functional and lacks the more sophisticated, precise collocations that would characterize a higher band. For instance, 'final exam' could be more naturally expressed as 'final examinations', and 'present in the town' is slightly awkward. Expanding your range to include more idiomatic or precise academic/formal phrasing would enhance your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional-like structure in 'If the shower... is leaking... I request you to get this fixed'. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'sudden delay in my final exam' (should be plural 'exams') and 'unexpected orange alert' (missing an article 'an'). Punctuation is generally accurate, though some sentences could be refined for better flow. The majority of your sentences are clear and error-free, which ensures that your message is conveyed without any confusion to the reader.
