Write a letter to the owner of your apartment. In your letter

- explain why your plans have changed
- tell the owner about a problem in the apartment
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing to extend my rental agreement with you.
I am Kiran Kaur. I am living in apartment 301 with my family. Initially, I signed six-month contract with you. But , now I am planning to live here for two years . Because, my husband started his own business, which is quite popular in nearby towns. Moreover, my daughter started her schooling . So, it is very difficult for us to change the school continusoly and for her to adopt to the environment. Due to this, we will have to face a lot of problems. Also, I am 4 months pregnant. Beacause of this reason, we are deciding to sign our lease for at least two years.
Apart from this, there are some problems in the apartment ,such as the bathroom tap leakage and the dishwasher not funtioning. Could you please call the mechanic and ask him to repair all these items? I would appreciate it , if you could tell me on what day you will come to give us the new lease.
I am waiting for your response.
Your Sincerely,
Kiran Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state the desired extension period (two years), provide logical reasons for the change in plans (husband's business, daughter's schooling, and pregnancy), and identify specific maintenance issues (leaking tap and broken dishwasher). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a landlord. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, ensuring the reader understands your situation and your requests. To reach a higher band, ensure that the transition between the personal reasons and the maintenance request is slightly smoother to maintain a professional flow.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Also', and 'Apart from this' to link your points. However, the paragraphing is somewhat fragmented; the letter would benefit from a more distinct separation between the explanation of your situation and the request for repairs. Some sentences are slightly disjointed, such as the transition between the daughter's schooling and the pregnancy. Improving the use of referencing and varied cohesive markers would enhance the flow and help the reader navigate the text more naturally.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'extend my rental agreement' and 'functioning'. However, there are several spelling errors ('continusoly', 'adopt' instead of 'adapt', 'Beacause', 'funtioning') and minor word choice inaccuracies. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure careful proofreading of common words to avoid distracting the reader from your message.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with punctuation (e.g., unnecessary spaces before commas) and article usage ('a six-month contract'). Some sentence constructions are slightly awkward, such as 'it is very difficult for us to change the school continusoly'. There are also minor errors in verb tense and agreement. Increasing the variety of complex structures while reducing these recurring mechanical errors would significantly improve your score in this criterion.
